Etymology[edit]

From Middle English -most, -moste, -mest, from Old English -mest, conflated with most; from Proto-Germanic *-umistaz, from the comparative suffix *-umô + the regular superlative suffix *-istaz (English -est); *-umô in turn is from Proto-Indo-European *-mHo-. See foremost for more.
