天然ウランの中には、核分裂をするウラン－235が約0.7％程度しか含まれていないため、これを軽水型原子力発電所で使用するには、ウラン－235の割合を２～４％に高める必要があるので、天然ウランから目的とするウラン－235の含有量を高めることをウラン濃縮という。
この濃縮法には、ウラン－235とウラン－238のわずかな質量差を利用した遠心分離法やガス拡散法、レーザ法、化学交換法等がある。我が国のウラン濃縮は、遠心分離法で行われている。
天然ウランとは、ウラン－234（存在比0.005%）、ウラン－235（同0.72%）、ウラン－238（同99.275%）と質量数が３種類の同位元素（同位体の集まり）からなる混合物である。
