Ubuntuとは、Canonical Ltd.などが中心となり開発されているLinuxディストリビューションの一種である。
UbuntuはDebian GNU/Linuxをベースにしており、無償で提供されている。Ubuntuにはオペレーティングシステム（OS）をはじめ、ワープロソフトや表計算ソフト、Webブラウザやゲームソフトといった様々なアプリケーションソフトが付属しており、Ubuntuをインストールするだけで一通りのデスクトップパソコンの環境をそろえることが可能である。
Ubuntuは「デスクトップ版」と「サーバー版」の2種類が用意されている。「デスクトップ版」では簡単な操作で付属ソフトウェアを全てインストールできるが、「サーバー版」では欲しい機能だけを指定してインストールすることができるようになっている。

Ubuntu（ウブントゥ[5]、ウブンツ、国際音声記号[/ùbúntú/]; oo-BOON-too[6]）とは、Debian GNU/Linuxをベースとしたオペレーティングシステム。Linuxディストリビューションの一つであり無償で提供されている。
Ubuntuの開発目標は、平均的な利用者にも使いやすい最新かつ安定したオペレーティングシステムを提供することであり、DELLが自社製品に採用するなどの実績がある。
UbuntuはCanonical Ltd. から支援を受けて開発されている。Canonical Ltd. の創業者は、南アフリカ生まれでイギリス市民権を持つマーク・シャトルワースであり、ディストリビューション名の Ubuntu は、南アフリカのズールー語の言葉で「他者への思いやり」などの意味をもっている[7]。
