TKIPとは、Wi-Fiなどの無線LANで利用されている暗号化プロトコルの一種で、パケットごとに暗号鍵を自動生成する方式のプロトコルのことである。
TKIPは、それまで無線LANにおける標準的な暗号化方式だったWEP（Wired Equivalent Privacy）の暗号化プロトコルと同様、RC4と呼ばれるストリーム暗号をベースとしている。暗号に用いるデータ幅がWEPの24ビットから48ビットへ拡張されており、それぞれのパケットに異なる暗号鍵が自動生成される点を特徴としている。WEPでは、パケットの暗号鍵は比較的単純なものであったために、暗号が解読されやすいという難点があったが、TKIPではパケットの暗号を解読してデータを盗み見ることがはるかに困難となっている。
TKIPは、無線LANの暗号化方式であるWPA（Wi-Fi Protected Access）の暗号化プロトコルとして採用されており、無線LANのセキュリティ仕様であるIEEE 802.11iなどに搭載されている。なお、従来のWEPにのみ対応するWi-Fi機器でも、ファームウェアを更新すればWPAを利用できるという利点がある。
