アメリカの国立医学図書館が提供する医学・生物学に関するデータ-ベース。1964年から稼働したMEDLARS （Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System） を，71年に改称。

MEDLINE®（メッドライン）またはMEDLARS® Online (MEDical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) は、医学を中心とする生命科学の文献情報を収集したオンラインデータベースである[1][2]。1964年に米国国立医学図書館 (National Library of Medicine; NLM) が作成したコンピューター化医学文献データベース「MEDLARS®」は、1971年10月27日にオンライン検索サービスが開始され[3]、1997年にはPubMedの名でインターネットに無料公開された[4]後、改良が重ねられて成長を続け、2007年現在、月に7000万回程度のアクセスがある[5]世界で最もよく使用される生物医学系データベースである[6]。
