銀河系

銀河系（ぎんがけい、英語では Milky Way または大文字で始まる the Galaxy）とは、宇宙に数ある銀河の中でも、人類の住む地球・太陽系を含む銀河の名称である。 局部銀河群に属する。以前は渦巻銀河の一種と考えられていたが、20世紀末以降は棒渦巻銀河であるとする説が有力になりつつある。中心には大質量ブラックホールがあると思われる。
現在では銀河系のことを天の川銀河とも言う[1]。
また、地球から見えるその帯状の姿は天の川または銀漢（ぎんかん）と呼ばれる。
