［一］《European Commission》EU（欧州連合）における行政執行機関。加盟国から各1名の委員が選ばれ、任期は5年。委員長は欧州理事会が指名する。ヨーロッパ委員会。ヨーロッパ連合委員会。EU委員会。EC（European Commission）。

［二］欧州共同体（EC：European Community）の執行機関として1967年から2009年まで存在した欧州共同体委員会（CEC：Commission of the European Communities）をいう。旧欧州委員会。

欧州委員会（おうしゅういいんかい、英: European Commission、略称: EC、仏: Commission européenne、略称: Ce、独: Europäische Komission、略称: EK）は、欧州連合の政策執行機関。法案の提出や決定事項の実施、基本条約の支持など、欧州連合の平時の行財政運営を担っている[1]。

詳細は「欧州委員会」を参照 欧州委員会は行政を執行する機関である。2007年1月以降、欧州委員会の委員は加盟27か国から1人ずつが務めており、すべての法案の作成や、EU法の調整を独占的に行うこととされている。また欧州連合の行政機関や日常業務を統括する。欧州委員会委員長は欧州理事会が指名し、欧州議会の同意を受けて任命される。

「キャサリン・アシュトン」の記事における「欧州委員会」の解説

2008年10月3日、アシュトンはピーター・マンデルソンの後任として、欧州委員会の委員に就任した。欧州共同体設立条約第213条（当時）以下によって、委員は任期中において報酬の有無を問わずに兼職することが禁止されている。アシュトンが正式に委員に就任するために、1984年のアーサー・コックフィールドと同様の手続きを経て、2008年10月14日に貴族としての称号を残しつつ貴族院議員の資格を停止することとなった。 アシュトンの通商担当委員任命の件は欧州議会において審議された。とくにイギリス選出の保守党議員ダニエル・ハンナンは、当時欧州連合がカナダ、韓国、世界貿易機関との間で重要な協議がなされていた状況で通商問題における経験がないアシュトンの任命は適切ではないといった批判を展開した。それでも欧州議会の通商委員会による公聴会を受けて、2008年10月22日の欧州議会本会議においてアシュトンの委員就任が賛成538、反対40、棄権63で承認された。
