情報技術（じょうほうぎじゅつ、英: information technology、IT）とは、コンピュータを使ってあらゆる種類の電子的なデータや情報を作成、処理、保存、取得、交換することである[1][2]。ITは一般的に、業務運用の文脈の中で用いられ、個人的な用途や娯楽のための技術とは異なる[3]。

- ^ 後に「IT」という用語がより広く使われるようになったことについて、Kearyは次のようにコメントしている。『当初の用途である「情報技術 (information technology; IT)」は、データの保存・検索・処理・配布という広大な分野に応用される技術の融合を表すのに適していた。この有用な概念的用語は、その後、大いに役立つと言われるものに変えられたが、定義を強化することはなかった。ITという用語は、あらゆる機能、規律、役職の名称に適用するには実質を欠いている。』 [7]
- ^ 「形式 (format)」とは、文字エンコード方式など、保存されたデータの物理的特性を指し、「構造 (unstructured)」は、そのデータの構成を表す。
