大学における教育研究を行うための必要な機能を備えた基本的組織で、学部の下に置かれる。また、短期大学及び高等専門学校においては学部を置かず、大学の学部に相当する教育活動等の基本的組織として学科が置かれる。
A basic organizational unit for education and research, below the level of a faculty of a university. In case of a junior college or a college of technology, it is the main unit for education equivalent to a university's faculty.
