内燃機関

内燃機関（ないねんきかん、Internal-combustion engine：インターナル・コンバッション・エンジン）は、内部で燃料を燃焼させて動力を取り出す機械 [1]である。- ^ Internal-combustion engineの訳語であり、内部で（インターナル）燃料を燃焼させて（コンバッション）動力を取り出す機械（エンジン）の意味。日本語の「機関」は仕掛けという広い意味をもつが、内燃機関の「機関」は、英語のエンジンの訳語として使われ、原動機と同義となる。また、日本語で一般にエンジンとは内燃機関を指すことが多い。

- ^ これに対し、外燃機関としてのピストンエンジンでは、燃料を燃焼させ、その熱で作動流体（蒸気機関の場合は主に水）にエネルギーを与え、外部機関（=ピストン/シリンダー）に送り込み動力を得る。
