元々正常な反応であるはずの不安が、日常生活にも支障を来たすほど強く長く続いたり頻繁に起こるようになり、それと共に動悸や呼吸困難、めまい、不眠、イライラなどの不安発作（パニック発作）が起こることをいいます。
不安障害には、社会性不安障害、全般性不安障害、パニック障害、心的外傷後ストレス症候群（PTSD)など、いろいろな症状が含まれます。また、障害が起こる周期や時間、強さも様々です。
原因として、ストレスに対する反応が不適切な場合や、遺伝、体の異常や薬の使用などが考えられています。
症状は個人差が大きく、また、精神的な障害との区別も必要なので、治療は個々の患者の症状を基にして実施されます。治療法も、薬物療法や認知療法、行動療法などそれぞれ異なるため、専門医の診断が必要です。
