体がカルシウムリン摂取するのを助け、骨や歯を強くする栄養素である。脂肪の多い、卵、乳製品に含まれている。太陽光にあたると、皮膚がビタミンdを作ることもできる。十分にビタミンdを摂取しないと、くる病呼ばれる骨の病気原因となる。現在、ビタミンdはある種のがんの予防治療のために研究中である。「cholecalciferolコレカルシフェロール)」とも呼ばれる

カルシウムリン吸収運搬排泄関与し、骨造成に欠くことのできないビタミンD2植物体内存在)およびD3紫外線によって動物体内合成)の形態があり、ともに利用できる。これらは肝臓移行した後、腎臓活性化される。欠乏症すると発育停滞、骨の危弱化などが生じるが、馬では希である。一方過剰だと、カルシウム代謝異常結果腎臓心臓など軟組織への石灰沈着機能障害が生じる。天日乾燥された乾草摂取し、放牧など日光浴機会があれば不足することはない。むしろ、添加物などによる過剰摂取注意する必要がある。

ビタミンD (vitamin D) は、ビタミンの一種であり、脂溶性ビタミンに分類される。ビタミンDはさらにビタミンD2エルゴカルシフェロール、Ergocalciferol)とビタミンD3(コレカルシフェロール、Cholecalciferol)に分けられる。ビタミンD2は植物に、ビタミンD3は動物に多く含まれ、ヒトではビタミンD3が重要な働きを果たしている。ちなみにビタミンD1はビタミンD2を主成分とする混合物に対して誤って与えられた名称であるため、現在は用いられない。
