ニューメキシコ州（ニューメキシコしゅう、英: New Mexico、西: Nuevo México、"ヌエボ・メヒコ"）は、アメリカ合衆国の南西部にある州。州の北はコロラド州に接し、東側にはオクラホマ州とテキサス州に、西側はアリゾナ州に、南側はテキサス州およびメキシコとの国境に接している。また州の北西にはフォー・コーナーズがあり、そこでユタ州とも一点で接している。面積ではアメリカ合衆国で5番目に大きいが人口では36番目であり、人口密度では45番目になっている。美しい景観から「Land of Enchantment(魅惑/魔法の土地)」と通称される[1]。

詳細は「ニューメキシコ州の歴史」を参照 16世紀を通じてスペインはメキシコから現在のアメリカ合衆国南西部を探検した。その中でも最も著名な探検家はフランシスコ・バスケス・デ・コロナドであり、その遠征隊は現在のニューメキシコ州、アリゾナ州、コロラド州南部、オクラホマ州のパンハンドル地域およびカンザス州全体を旅した。しかし、コロナドは新しい開拓地を造らなかった。最初の植民地は1598年にフアン・デ・オニャーテにより、現在のニューメキシコ州エスパノーラに近いサンフアン・デ・ロス・カバレロスに造られたものであり、その後1609年頃のサンタフェが続いた。2番目の植民地はプエブロの反乱の後の1692年、ディエゴ・デ・バルガスによるものだった。ニューメキシコの王国内は幾つかの外国（テキサス、フランス、アメリカ合衆国）による領有権主張があったが、スペイン（223年間）およびメキシコ（25年間）による支配が続けられた。米墨戦争の1846年にアメリカ合衆国スティーブン・ワッツ・カーニーが指揮する西部軍がここを制圧した。当初スペイン、後にはメキシコに土地所有を認められた植民者の多くの直系子孫が今日でもこの地域に住んでいる。
