セルフコントロール: Self-control)とは、抑制制御英語版の一側面であり、中核的な実行機能の1つである[1][2]実行機能英語版は、特定の目標を達成するために自らの行動を調整するのに必要な認知プロセス英語版である[1][2]。より独立して定義すると、セルフコントロールとは、誘惑や衝動に直面した際に、自らの感情、思考、行動を制御する能力のことを指す[3]。筋肉のようなものだと考えられており、セルフコントロールの行為は限られた資源を消費する。短期的には、セルフコントロールの過剰使用はその資源の枯渇につながる[4]。しかし、長期的には、セルフコントロールの使用は自制心を強化し、時間とともに自分自身をコントロールする能力を向上させることができる[3][5]
