オーストラリア北東部、クイーンズランド州東部の珊瑚海(さんごかい)にある世界最大の珊瑚礁。長さ約2000 キロ。大小 700もの島が点在する。グリーン島、ヘイマン島、ハミルトン島、ヘロン島をはじめ自然豊かな島々が多く、同国随一の観光地として世界的に知られる。1981年、世界遺産（自然遺産）に登録された。大堡礁(だいほしょう)。→堡礁

グレートバリアリーフ（オーストラリア）

コーラルブルーの海とカラフルな魚たち。グレートバリアリーフは、オーストラリアの東海岸北部、北はケープヨークから南はバンダバーグまで、およそ全長2300kmにわたって広がる珊瑚礁地帯です。およそ200 万年以上前から少しづつ成長してきた珊瑚礁によって形成され、生息する珊瑚は約400種、魚は約1500種と、手つかずの海が広がります。一般の観光客の方はもちろん、ダイバーにとっても憧れのダイビングスポットになっています。

グレートバリアリーフ（英: Great Barrier Reef）は、オーストラリア大陸北東岸に広がる世界最大のサンゴ礁地帯^[1]^[2]。漢字表記は大堡礁（だいほしょう）^[3]。南緯10度から24度にかけて広がり^[4]、2600km（1,600マイル）を超える長さに2,900以上の暗礁群^[5]と約900の島を持ち、総面積は344,400km²以上^{[注 1]}となる^[6]^[7]。地理的な位置は、クイーンズランド州沿岸の珊瑚海に存在する。
