エディンバラ大学（University of Edinburgh）は1583年に設立された、英国で6番目に長い歴史を有する国立研究大学である（「Ancient University」の1つ）[1]。キャンパスはスコットランドの首都エディンバラにあり、ユネスコの世界遺産に登録されている旧市街の多くの建物がエディンバラ大学の所有物である。[2][3] エディンバラ大学には毎年約47,000人の出願者があり、出願数で言うと英国で三番目に人気の大学である。[4]英国屈指の難関大学の一つとして知られ、競争率は約12倍である。.[5]スコットランドで4番目に古い大学であり、スコットランドにある最高学府のうち最高峰とされている。[6][7][8]2011年のThe Times Higher Education Supplementではヨーロッパ7位、QS世界大学ランキングではヨーロッパ6位、世界20位にランク付けされている。[9][10]スコットランドの大学としては唯一ラッセルグループに所属しており、ヨーロッパの大学の提携組織であるコインブラ・グループ、ヨーロッパ研究大学連盟(LERU)に加盟していることも特徴である。[11]また、アイビーリーグやU15など米国やカナダの高等教育機関とも歴史的に深いつながりがあり、現在まで学術交流を盛んに行っている。[12][13][14]
エディンバラ大学は啓蒙時代に多数の人材を輩出し、エディンバラは北のアテネと呼ばれるまでになった。近現代史の重要人物を多数輩出しており、自然科学者チャールズ・ダーウィン、物理学者ジェームズ・クラーク・マクスウェル、哲学者デイヴィッド・ヒューム、数学者トーマス・ベイズ、第74代英国首相ゴードン・ブラウン、医学者ジョゼフ・リスター、小説家アーサー・コナン・ドイル、小説家ウォルター・スコット、発明家アレクサンダー・グラハム・ベル、タンザニア初代首相ジュリウス・ニエレレなどがいる。エディンバラ大学はこれまで9名のノーベル賞受賞者とアーベル賞受賞者を1名を輩出している。[15]英国王室とのつながりも深く、これまでにエディンバラ公爵フィリップや アン王女が総長についている。[16]また、2003年にはスコットランドの大学として初めてフェアトレード賞を受賞した。
